What Is OTB?
Off-track betting (OTB) refers to sanctioned wagering on horse races away from the racetrack. It operates on parimutuel betting, where odds are determined by the total amount wagered on each outcome, and a small commission is charged on winnings. Unlike traditional betting, OTB focuses solely on horse races and takes place at off-site locations regulated by state authorities.
The Hidden Handle is one of only 13 sanctioned OTB locations in Colorado.
How to Place a Bet
- State the Racetrack: Tell the teller which track you are betting on.
- State the Race Number: Ensure you are betting on the correct race.
- State the Amount: The dollar unit of your bet (e.g., "$2").
- State the Wager Type: Win, Place, Show, Exacta, etc.
- State the Horse Number(s): Use the program number, not the horse's name.
Always check your ticket before leaving the window.
Handicapping
Analyze horses, jockeys, trainers, and track conditions to make informed bets rather than guessing.
Daily Double
Bet on the winners of two consecutive races, often the first and second of the day, for higher payouts.
Hedging
Place bets on multiple horses to minimize losses and secure profits if your main pick falters.
Against Favorites
Don’t shy away from betting on underdogs when the odds suggest value. High risk, high reward.
